A Land of Timeless Connection

The lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Territory is a place where the land and its people have shared an unbroken bond for thousands of years, with every hill, waterway, and meadow holding stories that connect the past with the present.

  • Traditional Territories Acknowledged

We acknowledge with respect the lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory Victoria stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. It is important to recognize that each nation has its own distinct and unique protocols that vary from nation to nation, reflecting their diverse cultures and histories.

    Stewardship and Natural Connection

The lək̓ʷəŋən peoples have stewarded this land with great care, honoring their deep connection to the waterways, the diverse wildlife, and the vast flower meadows, including the traditional staple Kwetlal (Camas), that have been essential to trade across the Pacific Northwest.

    Reflection and Reconciliation

By recognizing the historical and ongoing relationships of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations with this land, we reflect on our own place within this history. We invite visitors to reflect on the colonial impact and the continued presence of Indigenous peoples, acknowledging that the journey toward true reconciliation involves understanding and action.

    Commitment to Cultural Preservation

As we explore this land, let us commit to respecting its history and supporting the efforts of Indigenous communities in preserving their culture and sovereignty.

  • What is a Land Acknowledgement?

A land acknowledgement is a formal statement recognizing the traditional Indigenous stewards of the land and their enduring relationship with it. It shows respect and honors the original inhabitants of the area where we live and work.

    Why Are They Important?

These acknowledgements help educate and raise awareness about the historical and continued connection of Indigenous Peoples to their lands. They aim to correct the historical erasure by promoting visibility and recognition of Indigenous histories and rights.

    Benefits of Land Acknowledgements

By acknowledging the land, we support Indigenous sovereignty and contribute to broader movements for social justice. These statements encourage reflection on our practices and promote a more equitable relationship with Indigenous communities.

Bringing lək̓ʷəŋiʔnəŋ Back to Life

Explore the heart of Coast Salish PediTours

What is known as James Bay and míqәn (MEE-qan) [Beacon Hill Park] was once an agricultural site for the production of Camas. The production of Camas for thousands of years has enriched the soil deposits on the southen tip of Vancouver Island. The site, míqәn, translates from the lək̓ʷəŋən language to “kissed by the sun,” and was carefully cultivated by the lək̓ʷəŋən-Speaking People for thousands of years.

Pre-contact, Nations and families were nomadic, island-hopping along coastal routes in giant canoes carved from massive Douglas Firs and Red Cedars. They left the Camas fields with the top brush burned off to fallow over the fall and winter, enriching the soil for another bountiful harvest the following year.

The Indigenous people's stewardship of the land has not only enriched Victoria's soil but also shaped its identity as the Garden City of Canada. This rich, nutrient-filled soil allows us to grow an incredible variety of vibrant flowers and trees, a testament to the enduring legacy of the lək̓ʷəŋən-Speaking People. The Coast Salish Sea, a constant companion, keeps Victoria’s temperature mild, inviting visitors to explore the city's indigenous history and natural beauty.
